Abstract (Summary)

In an interview, author Yukiko Inoue talked about his book "Online Education for Lifelong Learning." Inoue said that online learning is no longer a novel experience but rather an expected offering of most institutions of higher learning (and adults continuing lifelong learning) and is gaining strength and popularity in graduate programs across the US. In today's knowledge age, information and communications technology is acknowledged as a "skill for life" along with good reading and math skills. Online learning has become a common strategy to deliver instruction, enhance access to educational resources, and achieve success in higher education.

Question: What is one of the contemporary views concerning online learning?

Answer: Online learning is no longer a novel experience but rather an expected offering of most institutions of higher learning (and adults continuing lifelong learning) and is gaining strength and popularity in graduate programs across the nation.

Question: Information and communications technology (ICT) is recognized as an indispensable tool to enable education to face its challenges for lifelong learning. Is ICT also a skill for lifelong learning?

Answer: Yes, in today's knowledge age, ICT is acknowledged as a "skill for life" along with good reading and math skills.

Question: Today's students have different expectations and learning styles than previous generations. How are they different specifically?

Answer: The students of this generation value their ability to use the Web to create a self-paced, customized, on-demand learning path, which includes multiple forms of interactive, social, and self-publishing media tools.

Question: It's been said that education is guiding students on an inner journey toward more truthful ways of seeing and being in the world. Briefly explain this.

Answer: It means that students must be directly involved in guiding and understanding their own journeys in their process of learning and understanding.

Question: What is the main difference between humans and other life forms with which we share the planet called Earth?

Answer: It will be the constant development of new technologies. In the current context, however, humans choose to define new technologies as those that have emerged most recently, as various forms of digital ICT have converged and continue to converge.

Question: What is the connection between a self-regulated learning approach in online education and lifelong learning?

Answer: Self-regulation is the ability to plan, monitor, and evaluate one's own learning processes and strategies. Therefore, the concept of self-regulated learning can be applied to online education for lifelong learning as well as for effective learning and cognitive strategies.

Question: The introduction of computers and emerging technology applications has changed the learning landscape, but especially in higher education. In what ways?

Answer: Online learning has become a common strategy to deliver instruction, enhance access to educational resources, and achieve success in higher education.
