Monday is Missing Children's Day in Canada.
In 1986, the Solicitor General of Canada declared that May 25 will recognize the issue of children who have gone missing.
The Green Ribbon of Hope Campaign was created by students and faculty members of Holy Cross Secondary School in St. Catherine's, Ontario in memory of one of their students, Kristen French following her abduction and subsequent murder in 1992.
The campaign runs the entire month of May and is designed to draw national public awareness to the issue of missing children in Canada.
The Green Ribbon is a symbol to remember missing children and to seek their safe return.
Each year, thousands of Canadian children are reported missing.
These children are either runaways or victims of parental or non-family abductions.
In 2007, over 4,000 of these children were from Manitoba
The majority of these children are safely recovered but unfortunately, some cases remain open for years.
During Green Ribbon of Hope month, the Winnipeg Police Service in conjunction with Child Find Manitoba is requesting the public's assistance in locating some of Winnipeg's missing children.
The children pictured here are all missing and their families are desperately seeking information that could lead to finding them.
Of all children reported missing, one in six are located as a direct result of a published photograph.
The public plays a critical role in the locating of missing children just by taking a few seconds to view the photographs.
Child Find Manitoba has always worked under the premise that someone knows where each and every missing child is.
The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting anyone with information regarding the whereabouts of any of these missing children to contact:
Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250
The Winnipeg Police Service and Child Find Manitoba would like to remind parents the importance of being proactive in teaching their children about personal safety.
Anyone wanting information, prevention materials or educational programs is encouraged to contact Child Find Manitoba at 945-5735.
